Parishes

The Catholic diocese of Nottingham, largest geographically among the Catholic dioceses of England and Wales, spans the counties of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Rutland, taking up much of the East Midlands and with the cathedral church located in the City of Nottingham. From the fenland of Lincolnshire to the beauty of Rutland and the High Peak, with the ancient cities of Leicester and Lincoln and the great industrial centres of Derby and Nottingham, the diocese of Nottingham is also among the most diverse and attractive in the country.

"I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, 'til we have built Jerusalem in England's green and pleasant land."

WILLIAM BLAKE, JERUSALEM (1810)

After the protestant reformation in England in the sixteenth century, the Catholic hierarchy was destroyed, and a minority of Catholics was cared for by a sequence of apostolic vicars of the See of Rome, appointed by the Holy Father. With the passing of the Catholic Relief Act of 1829, and the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in 1850, Roman Catholic metropolitan provinces gradually emerged for Westminster, Birmingham, Southwark, Liverpool and Cardiff. The diocese of Nottingham forms the northernmost part of the province of Westminster, which also contains the dioceses of Northampton, East Anglia and Brentwood. Nottingham therefore shares borders with the archdiocese of Birmingham to the west, with the dioceses of Northampton to the south and East Anglia to the south-east and with the diocese of Hallam to the north-west. Finally, from the south bank of the Humber estuary may be dimly seen to the north the diocese of Middlesborough. For more information about the geographical structure of the English Catholic provinces, please visit this Wikipedia link.

Presented below, across several pages, are the parishes of the Catholic diocese of Nottingham.
